The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

Description:

High in his attic bedroom, twelve-year-old David mourns the death of his mother, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness. Angry and alone, he takes refuge in his imagination and soon finds that reality and fantasy have begun to meld. While his family falls apart around him, David is violently propelled into a world that is a strange reflection of his own -- populated by heroes and monsters and ruled by a faded king who keeps his secrets in a mysterious book, The Book of Lost Things.

Taking readers on a vivid journey through the loss of innocence into adulthood and beyond, New York Times bestselling author John Connolly tells a dark and compelling tale that reminds us of the enduring power of stories in our lives (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

I seen this book around on several different blogs and it sounded very interesting. Good thing that my local library had a copy of this book.

It is about twelve year old boy named David, who is dealing with the grief of losing his mother. Also with the fact that his father remarries and has another child with David’s new stepmother. David has hard time accepting his stepmother and new brother Georgie into his life, he is jealous and thinks that his father has forgotten his mother because of his new family. He takes comfort in his books, he loves to read and sometimes he can hear book whisper things. He finds a portal or a doorway type of thing in his backyard; he discovers a new world where he heads of on a search for his mother whom he thinks is still alive and new adventures.

This book s full of creatures, scary creatures , and definitely this is not a children’s book.  The author retells a lot of fairytales, such the Little Red Riding Hood, the Snow White, The Beauty and the Beast, all these stories are turned upside down and then twisted some more. It is about a boy who is dealing with jealousy, resentment, denial, and many more negative emotions that we all face. David learns throughout the book how to face all these negative emotions that person can so easily give in to given the opportunity.

Book was beautifully written, it flowed nicely. The storyline was very interesting, intriguing, mysterious, creepy. Characters were beautifully laid out from David to the Crooked Man. Well developed characters that grew as the story progressed. David is such a lovable character, even with all his shortcomings. You want him to do the right thing, make the right choice. In a way this is also coming of age story with life lessons.

Overall, this was am excellent read; it was good, creepy, intriguing, interesting and you just want to keep reading it. I give this book 5 STARS out of 5 STARS.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Description:

Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker, bookworm and band geek, plays second clarinet and spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to center stage of her own life—and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey’s boyfriend; his grief mirrors Lennie’s own. Joe is the new boy in town, a transplant from Paris whose nearly magical grin is matched only by his musical talent. For Lennie, they’re the sun and the moon; one boy takes her out of her sorrow, the other comforts her in it. But just like their celestial counterparts, they can’t collide without the whole wide world exploding.

This remarkable debut is perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Francesca Lia Block. Just as much a celebration of love as it is a portrait of loss, Lennie’s struggle to sort her own melody out of the noise around her is always honest, often hilarious, and ultimately unforgettable (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

I finished reading this book in two days I believe. It was very good. At first I was iffy about it, because I was not sure if I was going to like. But I guess you never know if you are going to like something until you try it. I actually had this for a while and I tried to read it but never finished because I got distracted with something else. However this time around, I did finish the book and I am glad that I did because it was a very good book. It did take me few chapters to get into the story but once I was past those chapters I could not stop reading.

What did I think of this book? Lets see… it was sad, romantic, funny, breathtaking, magical. I just loved it. Its about loss and rediscovering who you are, its book about growing up and facing things that you were hiding from. Lennie is such a sweet character, you feel for her, you feel her sadness and how much she misses her sister.
Joe’s character was very lovable and you just wish that there is more Joes in the world, because he was such a beautiful character. Even Toby, I really liked Toby and I felt sorry for him for loosing so much, you can not blame him for wanting to be near Lannie. I really liked Lennie’s grandmother and her uncle, I believe his name was Big. They were funny and entertaining characters, and you also see how different people deal with loss of a loved one.

This book was written beautifully, it flowed nicely from chapter to chapter. I especially liked poems that Lannie writes about her sister. The best part of those poems was that they were scattered all around the town, you could find them pretty much everywhere.
Also there is a lot more physical intimacy and talk of sex in this book than in most teenage books, its more open. Even Lennie says, all she can think about is sex. In a lot of books you never see character so openly admit that they want to be sexually active or that they think about it. I am also glad that Lennie’s grandmother had a talk about safe sex with Lennie, and that Lennie does not start shrieking and covering her ears when her grandmother wants to talk to her about sex.

Overall, this was a very good read. Like I already said, it was sad and romantic and many other things. It was very beautifully written, characters are very well developed and there is lot of growth throughout the book. The story line is well paced and tension filled, it is just wonderful. This is one of the books that I will keep in my book collection and probably read again sometime down the road.

I give this book 5 STARS out of 5 STARS.

The Mediator: Shadowland by Meg Cabot

Description:

Suze is a mediator -- a liaison between the living and the dead. In other words, she sees dead people. And they won't leave her alone until she helps them resolve their unfinished business with the living. But Jesse, the hot ghost haunting her bedroom, doesn't seem to need her help. Which is a relief, because Suze has just moved to sunny California and plans to start fresh, with trips to the mall instead of the cemetery, and surfing instead of spectral visitations.

But the very first day at her new school, Suze realizes it's not that easy. There's a ghost with revenge on her mind ... and Suze happens to be in the way (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

This is my first book by Meg Cabot and I very much enjoyed the book. I got this book from my local library and read it in a day. I’ve picked up and set down this book at least four times before I finally decided to take it home with me. I am glad I did.

Suze sees ghosts, she has always seen ghosts, and she is not afraid of them. She helps them to cross over to where ever they are suppose to go; she is Mediator.
This book was very entertaining and I had a hard time putting it down. It was funny, cute, and intriguing. At first I did not think that I was going to like Suze. She acts too confident like she has all the answers when it comes to ghosts and how to deal with them. On the other hand I did like her confidence, especially how she stands up for herself and her friends against the popular girls in the school. At the new school she meet a priest who sees ghost like her and for the first time there is someone who she can confide in and identify with. But for some reason she does not take an advantage of this, but rather still prefers to do things her own way.

I had hard time believing that Suzie can remember seeing ghosts when she was two years old. In the book she tells us how she remembers seeing them as early as age two. I find this little bit stretched because how many of us can remember when we were two or even three years of age. Even though seeing a ghost is a very big and significant thing in persons life, her memories of seeing ghosts when she was two is somewhat unbelievable.

I liked Suze’s new family, her three new step-brothers, I found it funny that she gave them all nicknames. Also, I found the relationship between her and her ghost Jesse intriguing and I want to read more to see what happens. I very much enjoyed reading about Jesse’s character and how he got where he is. I hope we find out more as to why he remains behind and why he does not need Suze’s help.

Overall, this was a very good read; the story was well written and plot was moving along, there were no dry spell. All the characters were interesting and well developed, Suze’s character grows throughout the book. I am kind of disappointed at myself for not reading this series sooner.

I give this book 4 STARS out of 5 STARS.

Once Dead, Twice Shy by Kim Harrison

Description:

My name is Madison Avery, and I'm here to tell you that there's more out there than you can see, hear, or touch. Because I'm there. Seeing it. Touching it. Living it.

Madison's prom was killer—literally. For some reason she's been targeted by a dark reaper—yeah, that kind of reaper—intent on getting rid of her, body and soul. But before the reaper could finish the job, Madison was able to snag his strange, glowing amulet and get away.

Now she's stuck on Earth—dead but not gone. Somehow the amulet gives her the illusion of a body, allowing her to toe the line between life and death. She still doesn't know why the dark reaper is after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course.

With a little ingenuity, some light-bending, and the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys! Maybe . . . ), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her.

Well, if she believed in that stuff (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

I had this book for a long while, I think I got it when it was first released. For some reason I kept putting it off, so finally I decided to read it.

I have to say that this book was nothing like I expected it to be. I mean I knew what it was about, but it is different from what I thought it would be. I read some of Kim Harrison’s adult book series and I believe that even though I did not read Madison Avery series yet, I sort of thought that it would be very much similar to adult ones. At least in writing style, but it was not. Do not get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with this series, it was good and I have already purchased the second book in the series since it was just released.

The story is about seventeen year old Madison, who is dead and a ghost. Actually not really a ghost since she has a body, but you will have to read a book to see how that happens. Basically, story is about light and dark reapers and time keepers. At first Madison is clueless about what and who she is, or I should say, what she can become. But as the story progressed mysteries are unravelled and new discoveries are made.

I really liked Madison’s character, she is smart, spunky, sarcastic, not a conformist, kind. I like the fact that she does not try to be popular, she just trying to be herself. Lets face it high school is not easy, there is a lot of peer pressure, among other things. Madison does not sit idly by and let others decide her fate, she takes matters in her own hands.

Josh and Barnabas are very interesting characters, they are both well written and hope to see more of both. Josh is nice guy and does not care what other people (his friends?) think of his friendship with Madison. While Barnabas is mysterious and do not know his intentions are. Are they good or tare hey bad?

The story line progressed nicely throughout the book, there is a lot of plot developments, also a lot of set up for the upcoming book(s). However, I do think that the end was somewhat anti-climatic. The action scene toward the end could have been much better, more action, it was just to easy. But do not let this get you discouraged, this book is still worth reading. I was surprised that the supernatural elements of this books are not overwhelming even though it plays a major part in the plot.

Overall, this books was good, interesting, mystery filled, sprinkle of romance, fast paced, well written and well developed characters. But it you love Kim Harrison’s adult books and you think that this series is similar or along the same line than no this is not the book for you. This is much lighter side of Kim Harrison’s writing, which is intended for different audience.

Bitting the Bullet by Jennifer Rardin

Description:

I'm Lucille Robinson
(aka Jaz Parks).

This is a mission unlike anything my vampire boss, Vayl, and I have ever been on. It's not our usual take them out and run; it's an undercover mission that needs the whole gang: a psychic, an interpreter, and a weapons specialist. We're joining a Special Ops team to nail the Wizard, a major terrorist thorn in the military's side. We've never gone in with such heavy artillery before, but the more the merrier, right? Um . . . nope. At least not since Vayl and I learned part of our job is to ferret out a mole concealed in our unit.

To add to our problems, we're being harried by a pack of reavers bent on revenge, and targeted by a Seer who wants to share Vayl's power - at any cost. Oh yeah, and let's not forget the army of demonic, soul-sucking parasites either. This is going to be a blast (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

This is the third book in Jaz Parks Series and I have to say I am enjoying this series very much.

I do not think that this is my favourite book in the series so far, but it is not like I hated it. Book was funny, intriguing and mysterious. However I do find that the mystery behind the story was solved too quickly. The mystery of who the mole is of the joint mission between Jaz and her brother's team; pretty much without any clues or investigation, Jaz all of sudden figures who the mole is. I do wish that there was more tension and intrigue behind the mystery because it would have made the book so much better.

I liked Dave, Jaz’s brother; it was kind of intriguing to see how the two of them interact given their history. I am kind of glad that the two of them made some kind of piece with each other. Also hope to see Dave in future books, especially now that he and Cassandra are interested in each other, very interested.

I do wish that there is more background to the world that Jaz lives in. I wish that I new what the rules are, what is acceptable and what is not. I do not have to know every detail of the story, but I wish that this world better developed and defined. Right now all is very vague. Also I do not see the point of constant need to retell what happened in past or how we got to this place. This happens on every page, this constant need to tell the readers how they got to this time and place. Readers do not need to know back-story behind every single event. It is somewhat annoying actually. Also it get confusing as well, because the story keeps jumping from past to present on every page or every few pages.

With all its shortcomings I still like this book, and that is because I can get past the annoying parts. I think the reason that I like these books so much is because I love the characters, especially Jazz. I like that she is strong, funny, sarcastic, and smart. I like the fact that all others characters see her as strong, smart, etc, and that they do not stereotype her. I read so many books and I find that the male protagonists are always protective over their female counterparts not because they need their protection but because they think it is their job. It is just refreshing to see a female character that can take care of herself. I like the fact that Vayl does not jump up and fights her battles, he helps her when she needs her help.

Emily the Strange: the Lost Days by Rob Reger, Jessica Gruner, Buzz Parker (Illustrator)

Description:

13 Elements you will find in the first Emily the Strange novel:

1. Mystery
2. A beautiful golem
3. Souped-up slingshots
4. Four black cats
5. Amnesia
6. Calamity Poker
7. Angry ponies
8. A shady truant officer
9. Top-13 lists
10. A sandstorm generator
11. DoppelgÄngers
12. A secret mission
13. Earwigs

Emily the Strange: 13 years old. Able to leap tall buildings, probably, if she felt like it. More likely to be napping with her four black cats; or cobbling together a particle accelerator out of lint, lentils, and safety pins; or rocking out on drums/ guitar/saxophone/zither; or painting a swirling feral sewer mural; or forcing someone to say "swirling feral sewer mural" 13 times fast . . . and pointing and laughing (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

I’ve been eyeing this book for a while now and finely decided to buy it from the used book store. It only cost me five bucks plus tax, so it was not so bad. Summary sounded so good and interesting, once I got the book I started to read it right away. However I was somewhat disappointed. I did not like this books at all; I almost gave up half way through it. But I talked myself out of it, I try to go by my philosophy of buying books, you buy it you have to finish reading it, that way it does not seem like I wasted any money.

I have read some prior review from different site about this book and most of them are very good and talk about how good this book was. I almost feel bad by saying, actually I do not, that I did not like this book. It was strange, confusing, boring, just not my cup of tea. I felt that Earwig or Emily was such a one dimensional character; I felt like there was no growth in characters or the plot. All characters stay the same throughout the whole book.
I realise that the book is presented as Emily’s notebook; at fist I did not mind the numbering or the weird dialog, but it just gets old and tiring after a while. This book was support to be funny too, but I did not find it funny, Maybe I missed the humour all together, who knows.

Another thing that I hated is Emily’s alias, Earwig. I hate earwigs, they make my skin crawl, they are such discussing bugs. When I read that her alias is Earwig I was ready to put the book down and never look at it again, because I was already having this crawly feeling up my back, legs and arms. Also I could not get this mage out of my head, I kept picturing Emily as a human sized earwig. I have this major hate relationship with earwigs and I think I better shut up about them, because this review might turn up to be about earwigs.
I just did not like this book, I did not find it interesting, funny or mysterious. As the matter of fact the mystery surrounding Emily and her amnesia was actually annoying and somewhat redundant.

I give this book 2 STARS out of 5 STARS.

Another One Bites the Dust by Jennifer Rardin

Description:

Jaz Parks has enough trouble in her personal life. What she doesn't need is more trouble with her vampire boss and another mission. This time she has to retrieve a vital piece of biotechnology by killing the maniac who stole it: an ancient Chinese vamp. Their cover in this mission: professional entertainers at the Corpus Christi's Winter Festival. The crew's all here: a psychic, a techno-wizard, a singing vampire, a juggling PI, and Jaz. Holy crap in a bottomless well, Jaz is going to bellydance. It's definitely, probably, quite possibly going to be the end of the world as we know it (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

I have finished second book in Jaz Parks series and I loved it, not as much as the first one but it was still very good.

Second book, like first, was action packed and there was never a boring moment. There are all kinds of supernatural creatures, intriguing plot and some super advanced technology, quite a few funny moments.

Plot line is somewhat similar to the first book. There is a bad guy(s) that need to be taken out and Jaz and her team are called in to do the job and along they encounter few complications, same thing in the first book. However, I did not mind it, it was still a fun read. One of the things that I questioned throughout this book was the fact that Vayl is Jaz’s the boss. To me it does not seems so, throughout both book one and two it seems that Jaz is the boss. The book is written from her point of view, however she seems to be making all the decisions. I have a hard time believing that some hard core, three hundred year old vampire would just hand control of his unit to his assistant (maybe more than a assistant). To me it just does not seem like Vayl is the boss.

Also throughout the second book there is a lot of character development and growth. This true for all the character, which I like. However I wish that there was a little more back story to Cassandra, Cole and Bergman, even Vayl and Jaz. I wanted to know more about them and how they got to where they are.

One of the things that I found boring or I did not care for much was Jaz’s dreams and dream acting out. For some reason, at least for me, it did not work, it seemed like a scene filler rather than anything else. The solution to her dream acting out problem was just too easy, all she does is talk to her brother and the problem was solved. I mean how easy is that, little bit far fetched.

Overall, this was a good book and I will continue reading the third book in the series. If you are big fan of vampires, or any kind of supernatural, than you will like this book. It has action, humour, fast paced, flirtatious moments and much more.

I give this book 4 STARS out of 5 STARS.

The Darkness Drops by peter Clement

Description:

Dr. Terry Ryder is special advisor to the President on bioterror preparedness; he has spent a decade attempting to anticipate which microbes might be weaponized and unleashed. When patients begin to present with slight tremors and numbness in their limbs, it takes him a while to realize that this is an attack. The answers he seeks elude him, and dark episodes from his past appear connected to the mystery.

My Thoughts:

This is the first eBook that I received for review and I hope that I do it justice.

I have read most of Peter Clement work, also my sister is a nurse and she loves reading books that are set in medical field. That is how I was introduced to his work. I have always found books that have mysterious illnesses and diseases very fascinating, they always keep you on the edge of your seat.

This eBook was very well written and it is flows nicely. Even though the story is told from many different points of views and it is not confusing. Sometimes I find books that are told from many points of view to be very confusing and it takes me a while to get back into the story. But with this book it was not so, there was a smooth transition from character to character. The storyline is very well written and developed, and very interesting. As I already mentioned the main plot of this story is the outbreak of unknown disease and the struggle to find out what it is and what or who is causing it. Book is action packed, mysterious, unknown diseases, possible bio-weapons, military, possible terrorist attack, friendship and touch of romance. Most of the characters are likeable and you root for them, but like every book there are those that you dislike as well. But the book would not be a book without a bad guy. Also characters are well written and there was a constant growth of characters. Book was never boring, it kept me on the edge of my seat the hole time. I read one or two chapters each evening, and each time when I would finish a chapter I did not want to stop reading.

Overall this was a very thrilling book, it was full of mystery, unknown diseases, and much more. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read, medical mysteries, thrillers, or just mysteries; you will enjoy it. Happy reading.

I give this book 4 STARS out of 5 STARS.

Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Jennifer Rardin

Description:

I'm Jaz Parks. My boss is Vayl, born in Romania in 1744. Died there too, at the hand of his vampire wife, Liliana. But that's ancient history. For the moment Vayl works for the C.I.A. doing what he does best--assassination. And I help. You could say I'm an Assistant Assassin. But then I'd have to kick your ass.Our current assignment seemed easy. Get close to a Miami plastic surgeon named Assan, a charmer with ties to terrorism that run deeper than a buried body. Find out what he's meeting with that can help him and his comrades bring America to her knees. And then close his beady little eyes forever. Why is it that nothing's ever as easy as it seems? (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while now, along with book two and three from this series. It took me forever to make myself pick up the first book and read. Now that I have I am kind of annoyed at myself for not doing it sooner. But usually I have to be in a certain mood to read books, I pick books from my reading pile according to my mood.

Jaz park’s series is awesome, I just love it. It had it all, action, vampires, crazy villains who want to rule the world, kick ass heroin, and much more. I love the book and Jaz because she is such a strong character, also she is female and CIA assassin. I love that she is not weak and she does not rely on the male protagonist to save her from the bad guys. But rather she works with Vayl together and he does not threat her like a damsel in distress, but rather his equal.

Book was very well written, character are well developed and you see them grow throughout the book. The author gives you glimpses at characters and who they are , but does not reveal everything at once, but gives you bits and pieces throughput the book. I also hope that we get to see more of the other characters, Cole, Cassandra and Bergman they were fun characters to read about.  I do have to say, I can not believe that Vayl was married to that woman, man she is evil, what the hell was he thinking, you will know what I am talking about when you read this book.

There was not much romance in the book, actually any. However there is potential for future romantic relationship development between Jaz and Vayl. There is chemistry between the two and it will be interesting were the author takes it.

I do not think that I have anything negative to say about this book. The only thing that bothered me was Jaz’s inner monolog. She would do this thing were she would repeat certain statement or word three times. Like for example “kill him, kill him, kill him”, it almost seems like she has OCD were she has to repeat everything three times. I just did not understand the point behind it. There was quite a few of these throughout the book.

Overall this book , series, seems to have a lot of potential and I am glad that I started reading it.

I give this book 4.5 STARS out of 5 STARS.

Deception by Lee Nichols

Description:

When Emma Vaile's parents leave on mysterious business trip, it gives her the perfect excuse to be a rebellious teen. Throw some parties, get a tattoo (or maybe just a piercing), and enjoy the first few weeks of her junior year. Then her best friend stops talking to her, the cops crash her party, and Emma finds herself in the hands of a new guardian—her college-age "knight in J.Crew armor," Bennett Stern—and on a plane to his museum-like mansion in New England.

After enrolling at Thatcher Academy, Emma settles in by making friends with the popular legacy crowd. But she can't shake the strange visions that are haunting her. She has memories of Thatcher she can't explain, as if she's returning home to a place she's never been. Emma doesn't trust anyone anymore—except maybe Bennett. But he's about to reveal a ghostly secret to Emma. One that will explain the visions . . . and make Emma fear for her life (from Goodreads).

My Thoughts:

This book was very good, when I first started to read it I was not really sure if I would like it or not. First few chapters were a struggle because I was not sure if I was going to like Emma. But as I read further she became a likeable character.

Emma’s character is very likeable character once you get to know her better. At first I did not think that I was going to like. She was almost whiny in the beginning, and I have whiny characters. But like I said she does grow on you, as I got to know Emma better I like her more. I felt her loneliness and her missing her family and her former best friend.

I wish that there is more action and suspense; more development of relationship between Emma and Bennett, I felt that it was very much lacking. I wish that there was more interaction between the two of them. Other problem that I had with the relationship between Emma and Bennett, it was so unexpected. In the very first scene where Bennett shows up for the first time, we mean Bennett and learn right away that Emma is in love with him. It was very sudden and unexpected, there was no build up at all.

All the characters were very likeable and well written, I really liked Sarah, Emma’s new friend at the new school. I still have not made up my mind about Bennett, I do not know him well enough to like him, but I do not dislike him either.

Overall this is a very good book, it has a some romance, some suspense, little of action, creepy ghosts and good ghosts, it has pretty much everything. I was also excited to learn that there will another book in the series. Is not interesting that almost every new book that comes out in teen genre it is a series?

I give this book 4 STARS out of 5 STARS.
